Quran 49:6
O believers, if an evildoer brings you any news, verify ˹it

The Messenger of Allah [SAW] said: "Fighting a Muslim is Kufr and defaming him is evildoing

One: Umar bin Sad bin Abi Waqqas

Tarikh al-Saghir, V1 p75
When Imam Husayn (a.s.) encamped at Karbala, Umar ibn Sa'd was the first to strike at his pavilion.

Al-Dhahabi in Siyar A'lam al-Nubala, V4 p349
Al-Dhahabi identifies Umar ibn Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas as the commander of the force that fought against Imam Husayn (a.s.). He was later killed by al-Mukhtar.

Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani in Tahdhib al-Tahdhib, V7 p396
Ibn Hajar identifies him as Umar ibn Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas al-Zuhri, Abu Hafs al-Madani, who settled in Kufa. He narrated from his father, Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas, and Abu Sa'id al-Khudri.
Ibn Hajar also records that Ibn Ziyad placed Umar ibn Sa'd in command of an army to fight Imam Husayn (a.s.). Umar eventually went out against Imam Husayn and fought him until Imam Husayn was killed.

Two: Ubaydullah bin Ziyad

Al-Dinawari in al-Akhbar al-Tiwal, p279
Ubayd Allah ibn Ziyad said that he killed Imam Husayn (a.s.) because Husayn had risen against their ruler, Yazid, and Yazid had sent him the order to kill Husayn. He argued that if killing Imam Husayn was a sin, then Yazid was responsible for it.

Ibn al-Athir in al-Kamil fi al-Tarikh, V4 p55
Ubayd Allah ibn Ziyad said that Yazid had ordered him to kill Imam Husayn (a.s.), otherwise Yazid would have him killed. He therefore chose to kill Imam Husayn.

Al-Suyuti in Tarikh al-Khulafa, p125
Al-Suyuti records that Yazid wrote to his governor in Iraq, Ubayd Allah ibn Ziyad, ordering the killing of Imam Husayn (a.s.).

Three: Shimer bin Zil Joshan

Al-Dhahabi in Mizan al-I'tidal, V2 p280, Biography 3742
Abu Ishaq related that Shimr used to pray with them and ask Allah for forgiveness, saying that Allah knew him to be a righteous man. Abu Ishaq challenged him: “How can Allah forgive you when you assisted in killing the son of the Messenger of Allah?” Shimr replied that their rulers had commanded them and they did not disobey. Abu Ishaq rejected this excuse, saying that obedience is only in what is right.

Al-Safadi in al-Wafi bil-Wafayat, V13 pp38–39, Biography 7962
Al-Safadi identifies Shimr ibn Dhi al-Jawshan as a Tabi'i and as one of those involved in the killing of Imam Husayn (a.s.).

Ibn Asakir records Shimr ibn Dhi al-Jawshan among those involved in the killing of Imam Husayn (a.s.). Another report identifies Shimr as the one who undertook the killing, while Umar ibn Sa'd was commander of the army.

Ibn Asakir in Tarikh Madinat Dimashq, V55 p16
Muhammad ibn Amr ibn Hasan reported that they were with Imam Husayn (a.s.) at Karbala when Imam Husayn saw Shimr ibn Dhi al-Jawshan and said: “Allah and His Messenger spoke the truth.” He then recalled the Prophet's statement: “It is as though I can see a piebald dog lapping the blood of my household.” The report states that Shimr had vitiligo.

Al-Baladhuri in Ansab al-Ashraf, V3 p1315

“O Husayn! Do you not see the water, as though it were the heart of the sky? By Allah, you will not taste a single drop of it until you die of thirst.”
Imam Husayn (a.s.) replied: “O Allah, kill him through thirst and never forgive him.”
