Umar Declared the Day of the Perfection of Religion an Eid
Tafsir al-Tabari v4 p335, Hadith 11121
A man asked Umar ibn al-Khattab about the verse, “Today I have perfected your religion for you.” Umar replied: “I know the day on which it was revealed and the place where it was revealed. It was revealed on a Friday, on the Day of Arafah, and both of these, praise be to Allah, are Eids for us.”
فقال عمر: أي آية يا كعب؟ فقال: ﴿اليوم أكملت لكم دينكم﴾ فقال عمر: قد علمت اليوم الذي أنزلت فيه، والمكان الذي أنزلت فيه، يوم جمعة، ويوم عرفة، وكلاهما بحمد الله لنا عيد.

The Prophet Muhammad said: “The day of Ghadir Khumm is the greatest Eid of my Ummah. It is the day on which Allah commanded me to appoint my brother Ali ibn Abi Talib as the Imam and guide for my Ummah, so that they may be guided by him after me. It is the day on which Allah perfected the religion, completed His blessing upon my Ummah, and approved Islam as their religion.”
يوم غدير خم أفضل أعياد أمتي، وهو اليوم الذي أمرني الله تعالى ذكره فيه بنصب أخي علي بن أبي طالب (ع) علماً لأمتي يهتدون به من بعدي، وهو اليوم الذي أكمل الله فيه الدين وأتم على أمتي فيه النعمة ورضي لهم الإسلام ديناً.
