The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: Whoever assumes authority over any affairs of the Muslims and appoints a man over them while knowing that someone else is more deserving of that position and more knowledgeable of Allah's Book and the Sunnah of His Messenger has betrayed Allah, His Messenger, and all the believers.
ومن تولى من أمراء المسلمين شيئا فاستعمل عليهم رجلا وهو يعلم أن فيهم من هو أولى بذلك وأعلم منه بكتاب الله وسنة رسوله، فقد خان الله ورسوله وجميع المؤمنين.

The Prophet Muhammad ordered an army to be prepared under Usama ibn Zayd. Among those included in the expedition were Abu Bakr al-Siddiq and Umar ibn al-Khattab.
فَلَمْ يَبْقَ أَحَدٌ مِنْ وُجُوهِ الْمُهَاجِرِينَ الْأَوَّلِينَ وَالْأَنْصَارِ إِلَّا انْتُدِبَ فِي تِلْكَ الْغَزْوَةِ فِيهِمْ أَبُو بَكْرٍ الصِّدِّيقُ وَعُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ
