Umar fled at battle of Uhud
Quran 3:153
˹Remember˺ when you were running far away ˹in panic˺—not looking at anyone—while the Messenger was calling to you from behind!
Quran 3:154
Then after distress, He sent down serenity in the form of drowsiness overcoming some of you, while others were disturbed by evil thoughts about Allah—the thoughts of ˹pre-Islamic˺ ignorance.
Quran 3:155
Indeed, those ˹believers˺ who fled on the day when the two armies met were made to slip by Satan because of their misdeeds. But Allah has pardoned them. Surely Allah is All-Forgiving, Most Forbearing.
Quran 3:179
Allah would not leave the believers in the condition you were in, until He distinguished the good from the evil ˹among you˺
Quran 8:16
And whoever turns his back to them on such a day, unless swerving for war or joining company, has certainly returned with anger from Allah, and his refuge is Hell - and wretched is the destination.
Umar Fled at Uhud
Al-Tabari, Jami al-Bayan, vol. 6, p. 172
Umar said: "On the day of Uhud, we defeated them, then I fled until I climbed the mountain. I saw myself leaping like a mountain goat, while the people were saying, 'Muhammad has been killed.' I said, 'If I find anyone saying Muhammad has been killed, I will kill him.' Then we gathered on the mountain, and this entire verse was revealed."

Umar Fled at Uhud
Abu Hayyan, Tafsir al-Bahr al-Muhit, vol. 3, p. 97
Umar said: "On the day of Uhud, we fled. I went on until I climbed the mountain, and I saw myself leaping like a mountain goat. The people were saying, 'Muhammad has been killed.' I said, 'If I find anyone saying Muhammad has been killed, I will kill him.' Then we gathered on the mountain, and this entire verse was revealed."

Umar Fled at Uhud
Fakhr al-Din al-Razi, Mafatih al-Ghayb, vol. 9, p. 52
Fakhr al-Din al-Razi records al-Qaffal saying that the reports indicate a group fled at Uhud. Some entered Madina, others went elsewhere, while most gathered at the mountain. Umar was among those who fled, although he was not among the first to flee and did not go far; rather, he remained on the mountain until the Prophet came up.

Umar Fled at Uhud
Al-Salihi al-Shami, Subul al-Huda wa al-Rashad, vol. 4, p. 305
Umar said: "On the day of Uhud, we were defeated and I fled until I climbed the mountain. I saw myself leaping like a mountain goat. I heard a Jew saying, 'Muhammad has been killed.' I said, 'I will not hear anyone say Muhammad has been killed except that I will strike his neck.' Then I looked and saw the Messenger of Allah while the people were gathering around him."
